  • How are Herbs Used?

Herbal medicine, is in itself a powerful method of healing. Western drugs are usually used to control symptoms but do not alter the disease process.

For example: Antibiotics kill bacteria but do not improve a person’s resistance to infection; diuretics drain excess fluid from the body but do not improve the kidney function.

Chinese herbs can also rid the body of disease, plus nourish and balance the body in very specific ways, thereby improving organ function and building a person’s constitutional immunity.

Chinese herbs are traditionally given as a very strong tea made up of raw herbs for the patient to brew at home. Alternatively, either patent herb pills, loose powders, or tinctures may be recommended for convenience.

Each herbal formula we recommend for those visiting us in Union Square can contain roughly 4-15 raw herbs that have been selected for the patient in accordance with TCM diagnostics and patient symptoms. The benefits of this method are formulas that can be customized to the patient’s particular condition.

At home, the herbs are prepared by boiling them in water for about 20 minutes, strained, and drank in 1/2 cup amounts 1-3 times per day.
